A LFS here in town is having a sale on frags. This is store that I don't go to all that often because it isn't my favorite place (and they tend to be very pricey compared to their cooler competition). But today they had two very nice cand cane frags (one with about 10-15 heads for $29.99 and the other with 20 heads for $39.99). Note this is not the kryptonite candy cane, it is just like the old candy cane I had previously.

They also had two frags of montipora. They are rust colored and we very nice sized for $29.99.

So I am torn. I can get one frag... which would you do. Keeping in mind that I am startin' all over again. right now I have:

1. Tyree Cyphastrea
2. Large button polyps
3. eagle eye and radioactive zoa colony
4. small eagle eye colony
5. Mixed colony of button polyps with some unidentified zoa (not all that attractive but still alive by God).
6. Toadstool leather
7. a large duncan coral.
8. Montipora capriconia (very small two part frag)

I am going to be restocking my coral this weekend thanks to a fellow reefer trading me. So I will be back in the game this weekend.

My first thought is to go for the large super candy cane colony. As I like the idea that it is very large and will act as a nice "center piece" coral for the time being. It is very attractive and I think my little one would like it better than the montipora (although she would like saying montipora better, hahaha).

So whatcha think

The Candy Cane's are cool IMO, but they just don't have enough life to be a center piece..for me atleast?

Have you considered a good sized Frog Spawn, or a torch?? But if it's only between the CC and a montipora, I'd go with the Monti.

This would only be a temporary centerpiece until I get some my bigger stuff. It is difficult to explain the new layout. But basically the live rock forms a circle with a large amount of nooks, crannies and caves below and increased display area above. In the center there is an opening. In that opening I plan putting a nice brain coral or bird nest of something large and impressive. Frogspawn can't go in there because of the vacinity to other corals. Darn it.

Why would you go with the montipora? I really like the candy cane... you were suppose to pick the candy cane. please pick the candy cane. lol. I love sps and I know that it will turn out to be something wonderful with time... but... argh. decisions. Anyone want a WWII Bronze star medal... I will sell it to you for $29.99 (assuming you can get it to me by this evening hahahha. Retail value is around $50.00... c'mon help a fella out...

I think the Monti is prettier than the Candy Cane, but I don't think it would serve as a good center piece.

I like coral with movement. I think a nice center piece with movement would be awesome, but if you don't have the space for anything to stretch out and move around, the candy cane sounds like your best bet!! I've personally never seen a nice CC coral in person, for whatever reason they are always in rough shape at my LFS, while everything else looks great. The only time he has nice ones is if one comes in on trade. Post up a pic of the current setup!!

I have taken a few pictures, but haven't posted anything yet. I am really happy with it. Tonight I will get some pictures up. I wanted to do kind of a tank build kinda thing, but haven't really been that diligent about it. Tonight though.

I'm glad I did my build thread, although I took some crap for it a couple times, it's fun to look back and see what my tank has evolved from!!! Everything is still tiny and pathetic looking, but it's growing and improving at a rate I never imagined possible with SW, I was always under the impression everything is slow growing.

Post up those pics!!!

I saw a piece of the kryptonite candy cane at my lfs it is amazing. I really like the look of the candy canes i am thinking about going back and buying it tomorrow.

The Kryptonite is, without a doubt, really wonderful. This piece isn't kryptonite though, bt it is still a nice large piece. I will post some pictures this evening when I get it in the tank. Decided against the monti as my tank is small and I want to add some chalices and I am not sure how much room I am actually going to have.

Yes,i know the candy cane u were looking at was not the kryptonite sorry. I was trying to say that i really like all the coloration, and think it wouldbe a good choice.

I wish it was kryptonite though. This is kind of a blue green coloration. Not the prettiest of the candy canes, but still very nice I think. What I really like about it is the shape of the colony and the way the individual heads interact. Hard to explain. But I really enjoyed by last piece and it was doing well under the MH lights. Hopefully I will have the same experience.
