I tested for the presence of heavy metals, and have been using them in my own aquariums for 10+ years.

I also want to add that lava rock is essentially glass.

What about with inverts? Do you have the rocks with them? I'd love some, but I'm afraid it may be copper that turns lava rock green and blue, although that doesn't mean that the extreme heat that creates lava rocks wouldn't prevent it from leaching into the water.
 
I had a piece in with my ghost shrimp for years, and no unexplained deaths. I have a few pieces in each tank, actually, including my ten gal invert.

I can't, obviously, guarantee that they are safe. I have however used them for a long, long time with no ill effects.

You take a risk anytime that you use a piece of driftwood or stone in your tank.
