Any clue what types of rock are going to be safe for most aquariums? I'm already guessing that anything that appears polished probably has been hit with mineral oil and won't be safe. I do have access to some limestone block that I know is straight from a quarry.. but I'm worried that it might introduce too much calcium & carbonates..

You can, but its all a mix of limestone and occasionally some marble. From my experience limestone doesn't hurt anything in larger ponds... but this is probably going to be a larger chunk in a smaller volume of water than I've ever tried.
Try dropping a small amount of vinegar on the rocks that you are wanting to use and if they fizz, definatly bad for the tank, if not, you are probably okay(I say probably because there is a small chance that they may hurt your tank) Then just rememeber to boil them. If they are prefectly smooth, they need less boiling than porus rock. Also msot rocks that contain lots of calcium or are died brown or a rusty color are not very good for your tank either.
no such case here, this stuff is a gorgious dark blue limestone fresh from the quary. Only thing on it is a bit of clay from inbetween the rock layers.
However, the vinegar test is a standard way of indentifing limestone.. it'll react to the calcium.
Can anyone give a chemical reason for limestone being bad? I'm used to it being ok for ponds... sounds like I need to do some more digging..
