I recently was given a recommendation on upgrading to this skimmer. The HOB type. I have a CBR BakPak 2 right now with the bio bale chamber. The reason I am looking to upgrade because I get a lot of brown all on the glass and rocks and I am thinking that this is because of high organics and phospates. But the water is clear. When I looked to see the price for these skimmers, $500. Is it worth is for a small 55gl? Has anyone ever heard of these skimmer or have one? Any insights would be helpful!!

I heard they're great, I wouldn't pay $500 for a HOB skimmer though.

You're right that the bakpak is probably too small for a 55. I also have seen very good reviews of the Deltec, but would rather add a sump and give myself a bigger range of choices (and have a little money left over) for that much money.

The Deltec MCE line is the Mercedes of HOB skimmers. Sure a Coralife Superskimmer, a Remora or a Bakpak will do a competent job on your tank, but the Deltec will do it with far less fiddling and adjusting and will literally skim the crap out of your tank.

Is it worth the big bucks? Why do people buy luxury cars when a Honda Civic or a Toyota Corolla can get you from A to B just as well?

Because of prestige and comfort. For function, I would go with Toyota.

It's kind of a nice analogy. If you have the money to spare, you'll probably be happy, but it's a matter of priorities.

I remember reading that the Toyota Camry was or is the number one car that thieves like in the United States, Honda Civic was on the top of the list as well. I don’t know where that has relevance.

i think another thing that adds to the high price is it's foreign made, import fee + taxes + duties + transportation + customs + inspection fee + etc.

it's efficient in operation and electricity. it's quiet. most of the models also incorporate a recirculatory method.

but it's initial expense is high. dosen't have a "solid" feel. Man, for a 55g and can only use a hang on back type of skimmer, ekk! try the competition
-unless money is not an issue-
