My Jewels just laid eggs today. :dance

Get the Jewels if you want to get cichlids that will reproduce. They like clay flower pots as shown in the pic and are very easy to spawn. They are relatively cheap fish (in price) too.

Jack Dempseys can be very agressive, or very unagressive. So you might have to take out a fish thats being the bully or one that always gets beat up. Cichlids, especially the larger ones, make a heirchy in the tank. In my experience with dempseys, there is a very wide range in this heirchy.

Well, I'm housing them both together and I honestly can say they both are equally beautiful fish....especially the jewels when they are in breeding color...absolutely stunning.

My jewels look very similar to these guys. Though mine have the 2nd spot over the flank unlike these with just a single spot on the gill plate.
I believe the males have the flank spot, where the females don't, or thiers is almost unnoticable

Could the two be housed together without generating any big territorial issues or other problems?

Mine get along just fine...of course, the bigger the tank the better....especially if you have breeding pairs.

I think I am biased, (due to the fact that I kept a beautiful pair of breeding dempsies for a couple years) but I'm gonna have to go with the dempsies. However, the red morph of the Jewels are awesome. I wish I could get them up here in northern Minnesota.

Another vote for the dempseys.

I have to say though. We just recieved a batch of Hemichromis guttatus at the store and they are one awesome looking fish. The coloring is spectacular.

I will try and snap some shots of them at work tomorrow and post them if I have time.

i would go with a JD cause they are more colorful and they have a good presonality
