Again with a Demasoni question... hopefully in like a year I will be the Demasoni master answering questions on this forum :grinyes:

I have a very small female holding :headbang2:... she is only about 1.5" I would guess her at about 4 months old. I knew they bred young but I didn't expect it before 6 months old.

What are the chances she will get fertilized/hold to term?

12 of the Demasoni in my tank are of that age, 2 of them are 1 month younger.

Thanks!

The small 1.5" mouthbrooding female demasoni is likely older than 4 months (a 4 month demasoni is still quite tiny). How certain are you of her actual age?

A 1.5" female demasoni is likely in the 10-14 month age range, and quite capable of reproducing (it's happened in my 'grow out' tank a few times, at the 12 month mark).

The chances that she will hold to term are good, but expect a small brood (4-8 fry).

Oh boy... well I guess I should ask then... when speaking of size, do you measure from mouth to end of tail or mouth to end of body? I got them from a breeder when they were about 1" (mouth to end of body) and I have only had them 3 weeks... they have grown quite a bit.

I measure full body length (snout to end of tail fin).

Question: how come some fish in your signature gray text and some are in black text?

Answer :grinyes:: So that it doesn't all run together, easier to read... at least I thought so.

Thanks Kay-Bee

Question: and don't get offended I am new here... are you male or female? The name is unisex-ish...

Only about 2 days after I noticed the first very small female holding I noticed a second!!! The first stays very secluded in one particular cave, un-harrassed. The other just stays with the pack, swims around but of course never eats. Should I expect them to hold about 2-1/2 weeks? I don't think I could catch them even if I wanted to strip them, should I just let them release in tank?

I want the fry though, I don't want them to get eaten, I have a fry tank set up ready for them. Any help... thanks. This is my first time being a daddy... to fish anyways!

Thanks!

Congrats!

If you're setting up a fry tank then you'll most likely have to net at least one of the females and place her in there (not only will it be difficult to catch the fry in the main tank, but it's possible while you're trying to flush the out they'll end up as a snack due to the larger opportunistic fish in the tank, which is eventually the most likely outcome if they're left to fend for themselves in the main tank, though you might luck out if you've got lots of hiding spots.

They'll 'hold' for 14-21 days. This species typically produces small broods when compared to other mbuna species. You'll only be able to keep one female demasoni in the tank, if placing them both in the tank they'll try to kill each other. I usually catch the one that has either been holding the longest or has the fullest mouth and place her in the maturnity/fry tank. After she releases them I'll remove her and place the other female in there and consolidate the fry.

I will try but ****, it is crazy hard to catch them so small! They are so quick! Is there any secret to it? I will have to remove all rocks most likely. Red nets??? Do those work? Big nets? Will trying to catch her stress her out/make her release early??? Let me know, thanks! :help:

Nice.

A big net and half asleep fish is how I catch mine. I used to get pissed when I needed to catch a fish for whatever reason, because they are extremely fast and I have tons of rockwork I had to remove. Then I noticed that fish were pretty slow at night when there are no lights and you turn the light strip on, they start to slowly come out of the caves, with them "half asleep" it's easier to net them than when they are fully alert.
