Depressed Angelfish ? Black coating?

Well, schooling or schoaling fish will behave differently if they don't have others to gather with. For instance a single tiger barb in a community tank without other tigers will chase all the other fish relentlessly. Similarly, a single schooling fish will be more stressed, so more likely to fall victim to any bug going around the tank. I think of that old song when ever this topic comes up.

This is the song of schooling fish without a school:
One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
Two can be as bad as one
It's the loneliest number since the number one

No is the saddest experience you'll ever know (when other fish don't want to school with you)
Yes, it's the saddest experience you'll ever know
`Cause one is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
One is the loneliest number, worse than two

It's just no good anymore since she went away(the other members of the school)
Now I spend my time just making rhymes of yesterday

One is the loneliest, number one is the loneliest
Number one is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
One is the loneliest, one is the loneliest
One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
It's just no good anymore since she went away
(Number) One is the loneliest
(Number) One is the loneliest
(Number) One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
(Number) One is the loneliest
(Number) One is the loneliest
(Number) One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do

corydoras do fine in pairs. they do not NEED to be in a group of six.
they wont die if they arent. the only fish that i can think of right now that does NEED other of its species or it WILL DIE is the glass catfish.

Hi,

I never said they need to be kept in groups of six, I just said to get couple more. In the wild Cories live in large shoals (up to thousands!) and we should give them at least a couple friends. No they wont die, but they wont be as happy if they are kept in pairs or singly.

the rusty stuff on your fish may be whats called 'velvet'. Its a type of body fungus. Try a search on fish diseases and see if it looks/sounds like thats what you may have.

Cory lover is correct..corys do better in large schools/shoals. I have seen them in large shoals over 100 and they stick together very well. pygmy corys are impresssive in a a school of 100. I think this is in part what sacare is referring to.

a single angel will be okay in a 25. they should have more room. in a large tank angels will wander the entire tank. there are some who believe tall is better for angels and that angles tend to not meander as much as other fish. I have found otherwise..particularly wild angels .

when a 30 is recommended it is usually considering a pair of angles. taller tanks are better for angels.

All-Glass std aquariums

25 gallon 24x12x20
30 gallon 36x12x16
29 gallon 30x12x18

as you can see by this comparison if you have to choose for a pair..the 29 may actually be the better choice as it gives more height. which species like angels and discus will benefit by the extra 2" in height more than 6" in length of the 30. the 29 still gives planty of room to swim. a pair will need the extra room and rules out the 25.

a single angel should be fine in a 25.

jeff, test your ph out of the source..test right after it comes out. then wait 24 hrs and test.

are you using test strips? the pH you have should be fine monitor it and see if it's stable

if the pH in the tank is higher..check to see if you added any decorations that might leach and cause the pH to rise. (real coral I believe will do this)

as you can see the 25 is taller yet.
