last week I added 2- 4" tinfoil barbs to my 55gal, that houses 2 -12" oscars, 1-10" jag, and a 15year old 14" pleco(I know that is a little crowded but i have a 150gal acrylic in my garage that I am building a stand for).my jag was fine for the firt day or two, now he pretty much just lays there. my tank is well established, and i have been keeping cichlids for 7 years, has anyone ever had this problem before? there is no sign of any fungas or disease, is he just depressed? any ideas what is wrong?

a little crowded? actually it's extremely crowded. one 12 inch oscar needs 75 gallons. two need 120-150. add a 10 inch managuense, a 14 inch plecostomus and a couple of 4 inch tinfoils and you're looking at a 250 gallon tank. i'm not surprised the managuense is 'depressed' ... i'd be too in that crowded tank.

2 full grown oscars , a 14" pleco, do just fine in a 75gal, i know that for a fact cause i used to have a breeding pair with said setup. I may have jumped the gun with the tinfoils I just figured everything would be fine for a couple weeks while i finished my stand for the 150 . what kind of canister filtration would you suggest?

in my opinion, the 'best' cannister is Eheim, hands down. it's spendy but worth it. the 2028 would run a 150 that wasn't overstocked ... i have my doubts about its ability to run your however.

 Most conservative schools of thought would probably tend to disagree on that set-up except for emergecy housing but if it worked for you then God Bless. As for the change in disposition of your 10" 'Jag', I'd have to say introducing the (2) 4" 'barbs' to an already overcrowed 55g could easily be the cause. Have you checked parameters lately? What kind of filtration on that 55g? As far as filtration for the up & coming 150g (hurry up d_ _nit), if you're planning on moving all to the new tank, I'd say maybe combo (2) large canisters (Eheim 2028, 2250 -- Rena XP3, XP4 -- Fluval FX5) Even add A/C 110 for good measure (great mech) Good Luck, "T"

What kind of filtration on that 55g? a tetratech 500, I have found that to be a pretty crappy filter even with 500gph. however when my 150 is set up I'm sure it(tetratech and 55gal) will do fine with my buttekoferi only. my 75 i used to have used 2 penguin bio-whel 330's and a magnum hot hanging canister. i haven't tested my water levels for years(for shame i know) but i plan to have the 150 set up in 2-4 weeks, i got the barbs because i knew i was close to setting up my big tank and i knew that between filters, lumber(for stand), substrate, lights, etc, etc that comes with setting up a tank especially a large one i wouldn't have money for new tankmates and i wanted to add all fish at once . i will be seeding the tank with at least 30-40 gallons from the 55.

seeding the tank with at least 30-40 gallons from the 55.
this will do you little good. the necessary 'seeding' bacteria are located in the filter, not floating around in the water.

 Strongly agree w/ liv2padl!! You'll do far better using your existing filter material & possibly some of the substrate than the '30/40g' of water'. As for now, since you're 3 or 4 wks. from new tank move, suggest multiple W/C's to get your parameters back to par. (not too large, make the transition gradual to avoid shock). If possible get one of those 'new' filters you plan for the 150g running on that 55g ASAP. That will help w/ your present underfiltration (TetraTech sucks-- sorry) & prep it for future move to the 150g. JMPO Good luck, "T"
