I think there might be something wrong with me. At leasat once a day I think about being out in the California desert, under the intense sun, in the stifling heat, next to the stark, bare mountains that jetison into the washed out blue sky. The fact that I'm listening to the Eagles right now really isn't helping. We also got a new client in the desert- I swear, if I have to database another 760 number I might just leave work early and go to Palm Springs.

It's so bad that I'm trying to beg my boyfriend not to volunteer to do income taxes next saturday so we can go enjoy the heat. At any given time, there is NO where on earth I'd rather be, than in the Californian desert when it is over 100 degrees.

Just had to tell someoen.

I was listening to the CD "Desperado", which is probably the most cowboy non country CD every released

... But, you said desert not dessert, right?

Ok, never mind.
Same here...

Then again...

"Some Like It Hot - Power Station

We want to multiply, are you gonna do it
I know you're qualified, are you gonna do it
Don't be so circumscribed, are you gonna do it
Just get yourself untied, are you gonna do it

Feel the heat pushing you to decide
Feel the heat burning you up, ready or not

Some like it hot and some sweat when the heat is on
Some feel the heat and decide that they can't go on
Some like it hot, but you can't tell how hot 'til you try
Some like it hot, so let's turn up the heat 'til we fry

The girl is at your side, are you gonna do it
She wants to be your bride, are you gonna do it
She wants to multiply, are you gonna do it
I know you won't be satisfied until you do it

Some like it hot and some sweat when the heat is on
Some feel the heat and decide that they can't go on
Some like it hot, but you can't tell how hot 'til you try
Some like it hot, so let's turn up the heat 'til we fry

Feel the heat pushing you to decide
Feel the heat burning you up, ready or not

Some like it hot and some sweat when the heat is on
Some feel the heat and decide that they can't go on
Some like it hot, but you can't tell how hot 'til you try
Some like it hot, so let's turn up the heat 'til we fry

Some like it hot, some like it hot"

(only played loud...)

The California high desert rocks. To get out to the places that look as you envision requires four wheel drive and a lot of preparation. I had no idea how much water the human body requires in 110F heat and zero humidity before a few trips out there.

It's one of the few places in the U.S. where you can set up a target for your rifles that is 700 yards away and not have to worry about a backstop for the bullets.

Mother Nature can be a stone-cold, poker-faced b1tch. In the days before cheap cell phones we broke one of the gears in the transmission on our truck way in the middle of truly nowhere. While limping back we got stuck in some really, really soft sand in mid-day. It was like flour, and completely incongruent with any of the surfaces we had traversed that week. Crawled underneath the truck (there was enough of it sticking up to do so) and slept until sunset, then put out the effort to dig, put down sagebrush under the rear tires and inch out of there. Luckily, when we sank the back end we quit right there...sinking the front end as well in a quick attempt to get unstuck would have been a fatal disaster. It was a long, long impossible walk back to the nearest highway (I-15, I believe, hard to remember).

And it really is quiet out there in that heat. Not a single sound, not even the breeze. No flies. No bugs. No birds. Not a single light aircraft in the sky. No nothing, and we weren't even in Death Valley. The mirage sometimes goes straight up, with no wind to give it even the slightest slant. It's even quieter when you realize your sole means of transportation back to a cooler area is only partially functional and stuck at the same time.

I still remember it as a "cool" (sic) place to go!

Desert

Lauren, did your area have any snow? I heard about the freaky weather out there-wondered if that's part of the reason why you are dreaming of the desert...

Now it makes a lot more sense.
