Thanks for all the great suggestions. I think I'll go with the standard 2.5 with an internal filter because I know I can trust it and she won't be worried I spent too much.
As for asking her if she wants the tank, that won't be a problem because it's not surprise. She's excited about getting her first nano tank. Last time I visited she had five tanks, two ponds and two planted barrels going. MTS must run in the family.
