Hi Friends !

Just wanted to request for some advice and guidance regarding the Top Filters.

I have a Top Filter built-in in the Tank cover and it has 2 compartments. Now, how should these be filled ? I mean I know that one can use Ceramic Cylinders, Bio Balls, Carbon, Sponge etc.. but how much of these compartments should be filled with media ? When there's too much media, water (though also passing thru the media) overflows and simply falls back in to the tank. Is this ok ?

Should I just fill the compartments partially and leave some open space in them ? Also what order of media should I fill these with ? I mean where should I place the sponge (like before the cylinders or after the carbon etc) for very good filteration ?

Kindly advice friends...

Thanks and Regards
Kush

That is a standard Eclipse hood, it has just a filter pad and a box area where you can add stuff of your choice then discharges over a bio wheel.

While functional, it is not great. The one I have is not used as a filter and I run a RUGf and a Mag 350 canister on that 29.

Hi there !

Thanks for caring and for the reply. Mine has 4 large compartments in the Hood and each has a different media (Ceramic Cylinders, Wool, Coarse Sponge and carbon... Any ideas ?

I would follow the manufacturers recommendations. You can customize for your individual needs.

Any ideas ?

nagukush:

I have two much simpler versions of what you have (ie. for 2 5G hex tanks).

As Bob indicated these filters (and I do not mean to hurt your feelings here) are very rudimentary.

I have replaced the one pad (note the slots in the bottom of your cartridges) in my filters with filter floss and rinse the filter floss daily in tank water. IMHO this is the best that which I can do as the filter floss functions as biological and mechanical filtration (a concept which I really do not believe in).

I rinse the biowheel weekly in tank water.

Having said the above I do not really count on this filtration media for adequate filtration as I do approximately 90% WC's in the two 5G's from my main tank.
