I discovered the dreaded 'little red worms' protruding from my Bolivian Ram last night. Camallanus......

If I lived in the US - no problem. There are medications that will take care of the problem and don't even upset your cycle. But this is Canada....Home of the paranoid when it comes to some things.

I researched for about 3 hours last night and found that some people recommended de-wormer meant for cattle/sheep/etc, and according to their posts - they worked.

So this morning I called every feed/grain dealer around. I found one less than 10 minutes from me - sure they had de-wormer - lots of kinds. Well, yes and no...they had lots of 'pastes' - no power or liquid for the products I recognized. The only powered version they had was for chickens/turkeys - water soluible to put into their drinking water. Since I had nothing else - I thought - well at least it is something - better than just watching them die.

The infected fish is still in my QT - and for all of you who don't think a QT is important - think again. I have had the ram for about 3 months now and this is the first outward sign of a problem. I originally bought 4. They seemed to die off about 1 a week - starting about 2 weeks after a got them home...only one is left. Each time I checked the water parms - 0,0, >5. I checked the first two for signs of problems but did not see any - of course I did not know to look for 'little red worms' and since the Rams were shy and good at hiding...it could have been a little while before I found them - perhaps the worms leave if the fish dies...just guessing.

So - now one lonely Bolivan Ram - seemed healthy - all by himself in a 30 Gal QT. Just before Christmas I bought 3 very small Angel fish (only about a big as a dime) and put them in the same tank. I was curious about the 3 Rams dying, but it seemed like they just stopped eating and wasted away. No signs of problems that I could see and the last one seemed healthy - good appetite, etc.

Now - the moment of truth!

So I took a cup of tank water and dissolved 2 tablespoons of the power in it. I have no idea of the correct dose...just winging it all the way :)
I put it in the tank about an hour and a half ago. The first reaction was for the fish to all go to the top. That only lasted a minute and then they seemed fine. Then they looked like they were having trouble breathing so I got a small tank ready - took water from one of my other tanks - running the whole time - got back to the QT - everyone seemed fine. I noticed that their breathing was still a little labored - so I added an air stone to the tank. This seems to have worked - no one is at the surface and the Angel fish are checking the bottom of the tank for food.

Another interesting fact - within 10 minutes of putting the meds in the tank - the Ram was no longer clamping his fins. He did seem a little agitiated - but that could just be the worms reacting to the meds - I hope.

They all seem to be going about their business as normal now. I pray that this works and tomorrow I see some positive progress.

I have spent hours on the phone and on the Internet trying to find a way to buy the medications I knew would work - only to be stopped every time. Apparently in Canada only Vets have access to this stuff - and without a Cow with worms - you can't get a prescription for it. The lady at the feed store said that the Vets had been upset about people treating their animals on their own and not involving a vet - so they made enough noise that the medications were taken off the open market. I thought about bagging up my fish and heading to the vet - but the only one who would see me was an emergency office - $65 for walking through the door and they did not have anyone who would feel competant to write a presciption for a fish. Even if I provided the backup info.

So - rock and a hard place - time to get creative. I figure that at this point even if this does not work - atleast I tried. It is so frustrating to know that the medication I need is less than 2 hours away - just across the border and I can't get any.

Perhaps a 'Border Run' is in order - at some point. It would be just my luck to get caught trying to smuggle fish medication. I could be sort a little difficult trying to explain to a border guard - unless he is in the hobby.

Anyway - I will keep you updated as to the progress.

The medication I used is:

Piperazine 52
Vanilla flavored - didn't have a choice.

The active ingredient is "Piperaxine dihydrochloride" 97%

The bags says:
For veterinary use only.
For poultry, swine, and horses.
A complete worming treatment for the removal of large roundworms, nodular worms, and parasitic worms
(Ascaris, Oesophagostomum, parascaris equorum, Oxyuris equi, triodontophorus tenuicollis and trichonema.)

Made by Vetoquinol - Quebec

I will update again tomorrow - hopefully with good news.

Quick update.

Just checked on them again - the Angels are playing the bubbles from the air stone and the Ram is eating. It may just be me - but it actually looks like there are a lot less worms now. Earlier there must have been almost 2 dozen visable - now I see about half a dozen....keep your fingers crossed for me.

Almost 12 hours since I added the medicine and everyone seems to be doing fine.
The Ram is doing much better - can still see few worms, but the redness around the anus is almost gone now. His fins are no longer clamped and he is eating.

I will be doing about a 50% water change tonight and likely the about the same tomorrow just to clear out the left over medications and give them nice clean water.
I will watch for a few days and if the worms are not completely gone, I guess I will have to dose again.

This is the worst part - how much to should I use? - should it be done again?

At least - so far - so good.

Camallanus is a tough parasite to get rid of, even when using levasole, you have to re-medicate a few weeks after the original dosage. There is also a company in Florida called Florida Guppies Plus that sells anti-worm flakes, which could help if the fish are still eating, since meds taken in through food are most effective.

I hope you have the best of luck with this! I just lost 4 angels to this before I figured out what it was. (the one in my avatar was one of them)

Camillanus is one of the 'tough' parasites out there and pretty common as of recent times.

Levamisole Hcl is commonly used on thei parastie and is quite effective..if the fish has been in a main tank you may want to treat the main tank for the parasite.

Piperazine has been used but I am afraid I am not very well versed on this particular med.tho my understanding is it is most effective if consumed(mix it with food)..it is supposed to paralize the intestinal worm allowing it to be expelled by the host.
be careful if you have inverts in the tank.

another med that works well is fenbenzadole/flubenzadole both are effective at killing the parasite and the egss.
levamisole Hcl shoudl be administered 2-3 weeks after the intial treatment to take care of the eggs that hatch.

Thanks Star-rider and Ruben Tolon. I will be re-dosing them - likely in about a week.

Update - it still seems to be working. Very few worms still visable and they are very light colored now - not dark red any more. The Ram now has a lot more color and is more active than before. No more clamped fins and he seems much more relaxed.

The angels are fine - inventing new games to play in the stream of bubbles from the new bubbler.

I may have lost a snail - he was a hitchhiker on some plants I got a while ago. Not a regular pond snail - I have been infested with those before - this one was very dark red almost brown. I noticed him on the filter intake tube earlier today. I checked again a little while later and he had not moved. I gently nudged him with the end of a wood spoon and he fell off the intake tube. I don't know if he is OK or not -but if that is my only loss...I will not complain at all.

I was going to do a water change tonight - 24 hours after dosing, but tomorrow night is my regular tank maintenance night anyway - and no one seems to mind the meds. I think I dosed fairly low so perhaps an extra day in the 'mix' will help get rid of these things. I will be monitoring to see if the cycle has been impacted, but so far this method seems to work.

None of these fish have been in my main tanks - but I got lazy in my tank maintenance last week - of course - just my timing - and used the same pythyon end for all my tanks. I have two established tanks and my QT. Up until last week - I had a special tip for just the QT.

I ended up with 'chemical soup' when I first got started - thanks to my LFS - a bottle for everything - and I almost lost everything. My game plan since then has been Good Water Parms....and it works so much better. So unless I see some sign of a problem in my other tanks - just water changes for now. I have a Black Ghost Knife - about 9 inches long - he is my priority. Since he is scaleless I am very careful about the medications - or anything else that goes in that tank. In fact friends joke that they may need permission just to look at the tank - but I am not overly protective - it is all in their heads :)

So - for the next few months - the kids will be calling me the 'Chief butt inspector" as I will be doing regular 'butt checks' on all my fish. It doesn't sound like a lot of fun to me...but my family seem to be having a lot of fun with it.

Just for interest sake - the cost of this medication was under $9.00 and based on the dose I gave last night - I could take on a LFS with worms and still have some left.

Hi cmartin, just wondering where you got your rams? I'm in Mississauga and I want some but want to stay away from the shop with the worms. lol Anyway, there is one large chain store here named SmartPet. I don't know if you have them in Hamilton but the manager of the fish dept. told me that they treat the fish for parasites when they get them in. She mentioned that the owner wouldn't tell her what med they were using - just told her to put it into the tanks. I've got a feeling it was levamisole (sp?) and that there's got to be a way to get it up here. Good luck to you.
