Diatom tubes

After a number of uses the tubes eventually get buildup. How does one clean out there diatom tubes? Any tricks?

what are diatom tubes? what are they used for? i've never heard of them before.

if they're anything like filter tubes (used for under gravel filters), you can buy flexible bristle brushes to clean them out with. can get a whole kit of them in various sizes at the pet store for under $10.
