It's actually Microgeophagus ramirezi, and they originate in mainly Colombia and Venezuela. The Germans took some back to germany and tried changing it's classification to "Mikrogeophagus ramirezi" even though the discoverer named it with a "C". Gold rams and blue rams are the same species, just different color morphs. Both occur naturally in the wild. German blue rams or GBR is pretty much the common term for this fish even though it may incorrectly referring to the fish. An example is referring to an Asian bred ram as a GBR when in fact it actually isn't a GBR.
