They do tend to be shy/reclusive fish in general. Hiding places (though not necessarily shells) would definitely be best to make the fish feel more comfortable as it settles in.

I agree. Calvus are secretive by nature. They're much more likely to stay in the open if they have a territory to return to.
On a side note, mine never took much interest in one another until I added shells. As soon as I added shells spawning behavior began.
 
Ya, Africans and rocks are like apisto's and plants. Give them plenty of cover and they're not inclined to hide nearly as much as they will in a relatively open tank.
