As I said, it could be done, but not without an admin to do it.
I know, I know. Not trying to annoy you, really!

Pain in the butt and frustrating when you know how to fix something but don't have access to do it.

I vote Slip for admin! ;)

The code could be changed -- and it wouldn't take much coding to do it -- so that if the person opts to start a new one, the old thread is linked in for reference.
This is something we used to do manually on the forum I used to co-moderate. If two threads existed in the exact same topic, regardless of age, we closed one and linked to the other one. If one was ancient, that might have been closed and referred to in the new thread or vice-versa.

I agree with those who have no problem with old thread resurrection in forums other than General Topics, which I'm expanding from GCC. I know I've resurrected some old threads in the Freshwater and Marine forums, but I don't see the point of doing it in General Topics.

The forum I used to co-moderate had an archive where ancient posts eventually got moved. They could still be read but were locked.

Peace...

We have archives, and move useful threads there for later reference, but we do not--and I don't think we should--move every single thread over. So it becomes a guessing game--who's going to drag up what?

And, I have to say, in addition to this problem, it's just as much an issue to start a new thread on a really old topic--for which there isn't anything new to say, and it just riles people up. Not a trolling per se, but, for example, the merits of using any of the big box stores as yoiur primary LFS, or a bad experience at one of them--nothing new, the starter gets to vent about their particular experience...But it really isn't new or of value to the vast majority. Yet these pages hit 5+ pages often.
