I bought a Canon A80, which is the next model after the one that dwayne recommended. I love mine, bought it to take to Iceland and worked just great. It has lots of handy little features that I just might learn how to use in the somewhat near future 
It seems to have excellent light metering and I get really good looking pictures without flash. They also sell an optional waterproof housing and additional lens set if you're into the extras.
I guess the only drawback that I notice particularly for this camera is that it uses 4 AA batteries, so it is a little bit heavier than some of the other ones out there.
I bought mine at Best Buy, since it was only slightly cheaper online.
