Hello,

I’d like to preface my post with a couple things that may render the rest of the post irrelevant for the foreseeable future. xD

First: I’m new to fish-keeping, only just recently getting a 10 gallon tank and some guppies, but my interest and dare I saw passion for aquariums and fish-keeping blew up quite literally the second I began looking into what I could put in my 10 gallon tank. This being said, while I want a dinosaur bichir, if it’s a terrible idea for a beginner to get one I will manage to wait until I gain more experience with the hobby.

Second: I’m currently a college student with week long breaks every 1-2 months and a 4 month long summer break. So while the the week long breaks can be managed with correctly set auto-feeders, summer break would be my issue as I live 9 hours from the school I’m attending and my fish would need to be transported home, so if anything living in the tank wouldn’t be able to handle this I will need to wait until I have a more permanent residence.

Now to my questions. If what’s above is limiting me for the next number of years I’d appreciate feedback on the below still, just so I have the information and can do ample research and preparing for when the time comes:)

I want a 125 gallon tank and I’d like to put a bichir in it along with a red tailed shark(mostly so I can say I own a “shark” but I also really love how they look, but if not possible I understand). From the brief amount of research I’ve done I’ve read both that it is and isn’t possible and any kind of feedback on that would be appreciated. Also from the brief amount of research I’ve done, a school of boesemani rainbow fish and a pearl gourami could theoretically work in the tank with both of the above if introduced properly. Though I’m not sure of any of this as different sources have conflicting answers, so I figured the best place to go to get an idea would be direct feedback from those with experience.

If what I’ve got now doesn’t work at all, absolutely no worries, I just want the bichir as a “centerpiece” and some color throughout the rest of the tank. An idea of what species could work to make this happen as well as maybe a brief idea of what a tank setup would need to look like would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
