i know that using a pumice stone or small chunk of brick can easily remove calcium buildup on porcelain (toilets, for example) because the brick or pumice is harder than the buildup but softer than the porcelain, but i'm not sure if it would scratch the glass. maybe try it out on glass that is not a part of your tank. no scratches means you could use it. just make sure the pumice stone is new and/or the brick is very clean, no chemicals. are you sure it won't just dissolve?

razor blade is the best for me. grime can't escape the clutches of the razor. lol
