I got this old AC that I forgot about for over a year untill now when I was looking around under my house , anyways I was thinking about about reusing it on my new filter. The sponge was really dirty when I found it, there was spiderwebs and dirt all over. My question is are the sponges suppose to turn color like a brown when used? Also I just rinsed it under hot water to clean it is that enough to remove the dirt from it?

if its just a regular sponge I'd just buy another one, they're not that expensive (a few bucks) and then you know its safe. Most equipment you can bleach and its safe, but a sponge you want bacteria to grow on so any trace of bleach will kill them. safer just to start with a new one.
I have no idea what the brown from your old sponge may be, if its been under your house and what not! If you get a new sponge and it turns brownish with use, its probably just brown algae growing on it, or debris from the tank (dust from gravel if its a new set up, etc). Rince it well with tank water, if it doesn't come off, that's fine too.

In this case, I would just go ahead and buy a new sponge. Currently, I've had my sponges in my AC for a while now. At each water change or two, I rinse them out with the same tank water and they keep on going. The sponges naturally turn a crimson rose color after months of use so I would throw anything that's 'brown stained' out. JMHO.
