Hi there, i am new to this forum and i have a couple of questions. i've had my tank for about 5 months now. throughout those five months i've been through i've had to replace 5 fish and two algae eaters. starting i had a silver dollar, a marble angelfish, and 3 platys in a 10 gallon tank maybe that was too much, but since then all the platys have died, the tank started to get dirty so i put in a albino algae eater, and he also died, after i also put in a different algae eater the small black kind but he also died. the only ones that have survived is the silver dollar and the angelfish. about two months ago i added 4 small danio's with those two, the lady said it would be okay. since then. 2 of the danio's have done a diasppearing act. i cant find them anywhere. they are not at the bottom of the tank dead, they are not in the filter, and i was just wondering if the silver dollar or the angelfish could have eaten them cause they are nowhere to be found. also over the 5 months the silver dollar seems to be getting a little more aggressive than usual could it be him. please help! :help:

Welcome to Aquaria Central! You'll fing lots of help here!

How are you maintaining your aquarium? Are you doing regular water changes? Do you test your water for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH? Knowing some of this will really help us to figure out what is going on with the fish deaths in your aquarium.

I am guessing that the silver dollar and angel fish are still very small young ones, since adults of either species grow much too big to live in a 10 gal. My suggestion would be not to add any more fish and we can help you get your water quality up so that your fish will be as healthy as possible.

If you have not done it recently (within the past week), you should go ahead and change 25-30% of the tank water and add dechlorinator to the new water. That will immediately improve things and then we can start working on getting your system going well.

What kind of filter are you using? Any other equipment or information about your aquarium can help.

Silver dollars are schooling fish, they need to be in groups of 6 and a 65g tank. If you have had a silver dollar in your 10g for 5 months now, then he is either severely stunted or can barely move.

Dollars can grow 5" in 4 months easy. How big is yours?

Dollars are generally timid fish and do not eat other fish. If anything they will flee, especially when in a tank that is too small, when someone enters the room. If the tank is too small, they will smash into the sides of the tank and hurt themselves.

Angels *will* eat other fish and they also should not be in a 10g tank.

IMO you should really take the dollar and the angel back to the LFS and get fish more suitable to a 10g tank.

my dollar is about 4 1/2 inches now, he does seem to be a little scared though, could i just keep him and the angel fish in there by themselves and put the danios in a seperate tank or should i just get a bigger tank for those two. hey i appreciate the help cause this is kinda my first tank and fish are cool animals i kinda get into them.

I would opt for a bigger tank...
agels themselves generally require 10 gallons per fish

A 4½" fish does not belong in a 10g tank at all, especially a silver dollar. Please get him and the angel a much bigger tank.

The dollar, depending on the type you have and assuming it's not a Red Hook, can grow 6-8". A Red Hook gets to 12+ inches.
