Betta fish don't just disappear, do they?? I mean, suppose it died - would it decompose in less than 2 days??

My brand new betta in my 5 gallon tank was fine Friday when I left work. Today I come in and it's gone.

It was the only fish in the tank. No frogs, no nothing in there besides him.

There are two live plants and one little bridge type thing. I took the bridge out - he's not hiding under it.

It's a small whisper in tank filter. He's not stuck to the intake portion of it. I even took out the filter cartridge in case he somehow jumped in there? Not in there either.

There is a very small hole in the back of the tank where the wires go through, which theoretically he could fit through, supposing he can jump more than 3" out of the water. But he's not behind the tank either. Not on the floor anywhere around my desk, not anywhere that I can find.

I just don't understand what could have happened to him???

The only thing I can come up with is that someone took him. But who would steal a fish?? And why?? And the cup he came in is still under my desk. If someone was going to steal him, wouldn't they use the convenient cup that he came in??

I'm so upset right now. He was so gorgeous too!! :mad2:

Now I'm not sure I should get another one. I don't have an infinite amount of $$, so it's not like i can afford to replace them every week if someone did take it. Or maybe they just liked the way this one looked and won't take another one in the future?

I just don't understand...

wow! I hope he turns up. That is really weird.

sounds like he was fishnapped

either fishnapped, or maybe it died and someone cleaned him out of the tank for you...

Yup - checked the floor all around my office. Can't find him anywhere.

And say he did die and someone tossed him - don't you think they'd leave a note or something? I know I would leave a note if I found someone's fish dead. And to be honest I don't think I'd pitch it. Leave a note and that's about it. I mean PetSmart has a 2 week guarantee on their fish, so I could have returned his body for a replacement. Now I have to shell another $5 out for a new one, when right now we're working on one income and I probably shouldn't even have spent the first $5 on the original fish. :(

Bah. I'm just going to be cranky all day I think. :(

you could write a short story about your experience and call it "Invasion of the Beta snatcher" :D

i hope youre laughing about the name of the story... i dont think the OP is laughing too hard right now.. heh

wow crazy story, I think we all agree it was stolen... no telling what they did with it. People can be evil sometimes. I wouldn't put another betta in there. Also find some way to secure your tank lid if anyway possible. Sorry for the loss. Don't beat yourself up about it, it's nothing you did. We all wish ya luck anyhow.
