disaster question

The best thing to do is get a battery powered air pump. Or just stir the water to agitate the surface every hour or so. This will add oxygen into the water. Do partial water changes to keep the water clean. Do not use the media in the filter after the power comes back on as it can foul the tank water. Replace the media.

If you do not have a battery powered air pump but you do have an old inner tube you can use the inner tube.

First fill it with air and let it all out a few times to remove any stale air. You can use a toothpick or a small hairpin to keep the stem open. Attache tubing to the open stem and use an air regulator from your LFS to controll the flow.

It is not the best means but it is better than nothing.

Once you have over a thousand dollars or so invested in your aquatic life a portable generator makes more and more sense- especially if you live in areas where power outages are common.
I just survived three days without power and did not experience any losses at all. I have battery pumps for each tank I have running until we can get the generator fired up.
It's hard to swallow the expense of a generator, but once you do you will seriously never regret it.
