So, now that I have them all eating very heartily after treating with prazipro then pure metro including the 3 that appeared to be sick, I now have a case of tail rot & white smudge/smears in their tail fins on several discus.

I can't wait this out. I need advice on how to treat. Doing daily w/c's is not working out as I see their tails getting progressively worst.

If I examine them closely, basically they appear as little dots in their blood vessels/capillaries in their tails at the pt b-4 the capillaries split into double endings (4 endpts).

In some, these dots turn into a cloudy smear going towards the outer end of the fin.

In some, tail rot has started with the edge of the rot translucent/cloudy.

I started treating with melafix (72gal tank), temps at 89. will provide water parameters shortly.

I just did a 75% w/c & clean one AC110 & the sponge filter has been 3wks since I last cleaned the pair, leaving 2nd AC110 as is (which was cleaned last week).

From what I described, can anyone diagnose?

Also, any other treatment suggestions? I need to medicate.

I haven't picked up maracyn I &/or II yet, but if you think I should I will.

thx all again. you seen me thru this far, I hope this will be last of my probs!

bump me up plse!

Hey
Sorry they are sick again. Have you posted this on Simplydiscus? That is my suggestion...a wealth of info on Discus. They have a sticky in the disease section you fill out and post. I think they would be able to help.

Good luck!!

Steph

W/o condition of water which discus were exposed, and no pics, I really cant recommend any specific med but look into Kanamycin and Kanamyacin+ Nitrofurazone

I believe Maracyn I is erythromycin and Maracyn II is Minocycline (derivative of tetracycline) if memory serves.

Do little research on the subject of these three meds pharmaceutically and see which one comes close to treatiing your symtoms most effectively. you can always determine which med me works the best against specific type of bacteria. Then research for sysmtoms (I mean actual study results like in Merck Manual, not not just opinions of hobbyist in forums) for each types of bactria on fish. That is when and if possible.
I have had great deal of success in treating fish diseases when I narrowed down the possibilities from such findings. Look into Text book of Fish Health by Dr. George Post published by TFH (H-1043). This is the book where I acquired great deal of info when I had to do reverse research, from med to bacteria and symtoms, etc.

Also wondering wether you are using straight tap when performing 75% water changes?
Keep in mind that unnecessary massive water changes can/will caused further stress on fish that is not doing well.

Hope situation gets better soon.

thks all.

a couple of other members said they had similar experience & occurred more than a few times with them, they say not to worry comes n goes, just keep up the w/c.

since I couldn't idly sit by watching it get worst not knowing the consequences, I continued to treat with melamix & pimamix. so far it has cleared up the white cloudy smearing/smudge in their tail fins. but the dots still remain on a few. again, they appear to concentrate at the point in their vessels in their fins where it splits into 2 lines then ends in 4pts.

pics are not clear at all. will test water in the morning.

just an fyi discus are sensitive to stress which usually is the reason that an illness breaks out in these fish...
when stressed their immune system gets weak and whatever parasite/bacteria that is present within the fish is able to take over..

im pretty sure that there will be always be organism or two present with fish you can not rid of them completely...

with that being said... i would just try to keep things as stable as possible and figure out what could be stressing them out so much and fix that.. then let them get strong and let their immune system fight whatever is going on

it seems that you have hit them with a lot of medicine recently and that can take its toll on these poor fish. Metro esp i have heard is a pretty harsh treatment. i sure hope you gave some breaks between medications also

How are you doing your waterchanges? what kind of conditioner are you using? what are your water stats (all of em)? what kind of filter do you have. Is this tank barebottom or filled with substrate? planted or no?
are there decorations? tankmates?

pictures would also help

ok, I treated with melafix for 3days, then combo with pimafix. ran out of melafix. looks like the dotted/smearing/smudging has cleared up significantly tho a couple still have the dots. I think they are in the cyst stage. I may have to buy more melafix.
