I currently have 3 angels, none of which are overly aggresive, they only get aggressive when there are shrimp in my tank, or small guppies. And its more... hungry than aggressive I think, they enjoy it anyways!

Since I can not have colorful guppies in my main tank anymore due to them getting stressed out and dieing from big angels eyeing them up like candy all day. I was thinking I could get some brightly colored discus going on in there.

Will discus and angels co-exist? or will they have a free for all and the strongest survive? (with the price of discus, I have a feeling I would buy them small, and so the angels would win...) Just some info, It is a 45g long, lightly planted, slowly being converted to fully planted. I like to let plants grow before adding more. It has a sand bottom, 6 albino cory, and one albino BN pleco, think I'll add a couple more small pleco too...

Can I add discus? Opinions and advice greatly appreciated!:headbang2:

Some have done it with success, but I'd have to say no unless you're pushing a monster tank with ample space and heavy planting/scaping. A 45 is a good size for a pair of angels or discus, but wont do well for a school of either. Having 3 angels means that the odds are relatively good that you will end up with a pair at some point, and at that time your 3rd angel will be in trouble, forget about any discus... My suggestion is to hold off on discus until you can get a bigger tank.

They will co-exist in a very large tank but will compete for food, IMO angels and discus don't work well together. Also 45g isn't big enough for a shoal of discus.

dwarf gouramis, pearl gouramis, rams, most tetras, some barbs, platies, swords, etc...

I agree with the Tetra idea, but go for a larger species like Rummies, Lemon, Congo, etc. Neons and maybe even Cardinals will be Angel snacks.

i would add the 4 pearl gouramis this would look nice in your setup, stay away from the barbs they will nip at the angels feelers, another good reason not to keep angels and discus together is that the angels can harbour a parasite in their intestines that will kill discus usually in wild angels they carry these parasites but why risk it..

Thanks for the suggestions all.

Pearl gouramis, though kinda cool looking are not colorful enough to match the niche I am looking to fill.

Rummynose Tetra's seem to be the only one with looks that I would almost want, but their size seems to be very similar to that of my fancy guppies, maxing out at 1.5-2". So I almost have to wonder if maybe I were to breed up a large enough school of guppies... Is there a possibility that they would be ok and live all happy when in a shoal?

Lupin, What size aquarium would you suggest for a minimum if I were to want say... 3 angels and 3 or 4 discus?
