Discus Eating

I feed all my discus in my hatchery nothing but my BH mix. Here is the list of all it contains:

Beef Heart
Cod/Shrimp
Cyclop-Eeze
Spirulina
Lecithin
Protein powder (special type)
Vitamins: B,C,D,E
And additional astaxanthin when coloring fish is necessary

I feed this to all my fish....from fry to adults exclusively. And they do incredible on it. Amazing growth rates and even more amazing spawning rates.

I know a few other breeders that do the same..using personal formulas with excellent results..
I'd be interested in hearing how you mix this up..do you use any kind of binder??

No binder at all...the shrimp/cod keeps things together nicely. Plus, you dont want it to sticky or else the fry will have a hard time eating it.

even though i've never had discus i too believe that variation in any fish diet is important. Im sure its a rather tasty food but i imagine fish would get bored with it..... Also, im sure that even though this food you describe (NLS) appears complete there HAS to be other foods with higher protein, different vitamins, etc. The needs of every fish are different, just like human beings. You may believe that steak mashed potatoes and greenbeans with a slice of bread is the perfect meal, and provides you with everything you need, but does this mean you eat it for every meal? The answer is obvious, of course not if it were me and i had this NLS i would probably feed it as a staple type food while also feeding something different once a day or everyother day, like bloodworms or glassworms or brine or mysis etc. etc. However Thats just my opinion, i am no expert.

I read the title of this thread and thought,"Discus eating hmmm? Can't be much meat to them but the fillet would look interesting!"
perfect size for a large hamburger bun;) :joke:

btw..as long as the fish are healthy..there is nothing wrong with feeding a single food.

I just prefer not to.

I know discus thrive on the specialized food many breeders make(usually their own special formula) and I have seen very impressive discus at breeders. they can get HUGE

The question would be whether you have cheese and barbeque sauce or treat it like a portabello mushroom burger...
