Some people recommend 75 gallons or more, but it can be done in a 55. I'd personally recommend 55 as a minimum tank size for discus unless you have a mated pair.
I'm not saying that this person loses fish all the time, just that it's a definite possibility that she is not as successful at keeping them as it may appear. Stores around here can get juvies from suppliers for less than $15USD, and they sell them for quite a bit more than that, so there is a decent profit margin on them. And don't forget the huge markup on whatever equipment or tanks she sells, that's just the way mom and pop retailers have to do business. Most successful discus breeders/keepers would disagree with her advice, that's all I'm saying. By erring on the side of caution, you set yourself up for an easier shot at success, but that's of course up to you.
