How many pairs of discus can you house in a 90 gallon tank, with, i believe, though please correct me if wrong, the smae footprint as a 55 gallon tank?

I have heard 6-8 (individuals, not pairs) in a 55, but i believe that is short termed.

Also, do you find it easier to go bare bottomed, or a couple of inches of sand for substrate?

A while back, i remember someone mentioning a species of corydoras that did well in the higher temps that discus love. can anyone recall what cory they were?

Thanks.

discus love high temps...
and i have heard that they even love ph of 3.4

sorry but forgot,
you could easily fit 5 in a 90gal..
btw bare bottom is alot easier...
but discus like plants so thats going to be a bit hard..

Sorry i never measure my aquarium in terms of gallons. However my experience is that you can easily fit 20 discus in a 2 x 1.5 feet aquarium if they are 3 inch in size. The bigger ones, those six inches and above I prefer to put about 12 in a 2x2 feet aquarium. However if u are planning to breed them than the stoking rate would be different. Mine do well in the given aquarium size( the 6 inch for more than 3 years now) and the aquarium is bare bottom. I notice that if you occasionally disturb their water when they are young than the discus will be less timid when they are big. They are also less afraid if u put your aquarium at eye level. I must warned u that the information i have given you might not suit your country if u are not from around Malaysia or of tropical climate as I change the water almost everyday or twice a day

wait, 12 six inch discus, in a 2x2 tank? thats a 30 gallon tank...

20 3inch discus in a 30g isn't that bad. Jack Watley is always going on about like 10 full grown discus in a 55g, and in this month's TFH, his monthly article is about a guy that breeds his Discus in a 6g tank.

I have a dozen 3-4" in a 90 gal, 4' long. With about 30 other top and bottom fish. Mated pairs are in a 40 gal breeder.

In regards to permanent housing (no grow out), how many discus can i maintatin in a standard 90 gallon tank?

Rbishop: were you going to relocate the fish in the future?

dread, and jseng86: are you talking about juveniles, or adults long term?

Lukee: yes, about the temps, i've heard anywhere from 80-85F

They will be sold, traded or go to a 125 gal tank.

As near full grown adults 6" and up, I would only keep 3-5 in a 90.
