Discus in a sand-bottom tank?

hmmm...that tank must be impossible to clean! its probably a show tank

clean clean clean is the motto aye, i would use a mix substrate i have seen over the years that a tank full of sand could be awesome or a nightmare well if sand just sits there and the hobbyist doesnt gravel or have stir the sand so to say than a build up of noxious gases could occur and a ammonia spike could happen and wipe your fishies out, a mixture of gravel and sand would be nice and weekly water changes with gravel / sand stirring but yeah adult discus that were local raised for generations shouldnt be a problem with plants in the aquarium, go for it buddy..

Adult discus do not take as many water changes as you would think.

i am a discus keeper myself and i keep mine in a planted aquarium , with gravel. the trick is not to clutter the bottom to much that u cant clean around the plants. also it is important to keep corys with your discus because they act as little vaccume cleaners that will constantly clean the bottom of the tank. as for sand i had a patch of sand in my tank for a peroid and i couldnt find a way to stop it from coming out during waterchanges; hold the siphon too far and u dont pick up the detrius and too close u get a sink full of sand. i have 5 discus in a 40 gal planted tank. i do 2-3 15%-25 % water changes a week. mine have been growing like crazy so i would say they are doing fine. This is a link to my fish on U tube if u would liek to see them http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrDa-vp25Tw This video was taken yesturday, sorry about the lo rez

There is no reason what so ever not to keep any size discus in a planted tank.

with the right tank mates to do little house cleaning for any food not eaten by the discus and you are fine.

sure it make cleaning a little more challenging but its well worth the effort. Plants help keep your water cleaner thus making healthier fish.

sand would not be a good choice it requires more work and if after time you disturb it enough could easily be a disaster.

I think you need to do more reading on keeping discus.

here is a link to all you need to know discus for beginners

My discus have live in a planted tank the whole time I have had them. They started as little 3 inchers in a 46 gallon tall tank with gravel and plants and now live in a sand bottom highly planted 72 gallon tank and are over 7 inches around! Discus these days are not near as fragile as people once thought! :evil_lol:
