I received a shipment of discus where one of the bags leaked I originaly thought they were dead.

much to my surprise they were both alive the water left in the bag barely covered their gills.

no time to acclimate them they went in to a tank swimming fine their slime coat was white and pealing off I expected thatthese guys are lucky to be alive.

Today they have white cotton like growth on their ventral fins. no clamped fins swimming fine nibbled at some food but as a precaution out of qt into small hospital tank with salt and 86 temp. I will gradually raise the temp to about 91.

Any thing else I should be doing? I will post pic later

Frequent small water changes for the next few days I would think would be good...what size are they?

Sounds like they are suffering from fin rot caused by the water conditions. With the water changes, try to maintain the salt level you have established. You should see improvement (not likely to be a major one) in a week or less.

Temperature fluctuations and water conditions likely caused it.

I would add that discus are able to handle a lot of salt in the water. I have treated discus using as much as two cups, yes cups, in 10 gals of water with the temp in the low 90s.

Hi Robert, I agree with the suggestions here. Sounds like severe ammonia burn from what shipping water was left in the bag. I had it happen to me once. Don't keep bright lights on them for several days, I'm sure they need some quiet time to recoup as well.

Pop - I really doubt that you will have any bagging/shipping issues from Hans. He's been doing that for years!
