I am getting some discus but our tap water here is very hard (sorry don't know the measurement but we have to get a water softerner salt with our tap water) The PH is also high about 8.5. So how do you think I should do my water changes. Are they going to be OK at this kind of water condition? Do I have to make a water conditioning storage tank so that I am always putting in a more suitable water parameters?

you may not have to

it depends on the discus..they can be acclimated to the pH especially domestic.

you can also use ro/di water in a storage unit.adding the correct buffers to get the pH correct. many breeders do this..they have two storage containers..one for new water(from ro) the other with premix. but for a hobbiest you can prepare the water a couple days in advance.

I am now using ro/di as top off water*mostly for my marine tank..I have one container of ro/di and one that I mix the water for the marine.

Since we have to do as much as 50% WC a day does that mean that there is really no or very little biological filtration going on in the water? My understanding is that bacterias are just as much in the water as they are in the filter medias, so taking out water at that rate is also taking out the biological filtration. Clarifications???

Thanks Star Rider, so probably I'll just keep a few pails of water and just let them stand for 2 days or so before using them for WC. Not sure if I am really up to getting an RO equipment right now, maybe later.

My experience has been much better with tap than with ro water. Once i stopped using all my fancy ro equipment, my discus tanks all seemed to thrive with no more problems. Changing your water each day is really ambitious. In my tanks I do 30-40% changes 2x a week

The bacteria will be on your surfaces, not in the water column. Change away, especially with discus juvies. My juvie tank gets 50% or more, daily.

You should have a bypass up stream of your water softener that you can draw water from.

I am new to Discus and have probabily ( to some people's standards) done everything wrong, but my Discus (appear) to be very healthy & happy fish.

There is no doubt Discus enjoy clean water. :dance2:
Before adding Discus to my community tank I used to do about a 25-30% change weekly.
Now I do the same,but added a 50% water change also,so I do 2 a week.

I keep VERY close tract of my parameters now, especially my NitrAte,which I test daily, and use that as another type of guide. My level is usually 10 and still 10 when I do my change, but if for any reason it gets higher,I do another change immediately, even if it is not the scheduled time.

Like I said,I might not be the right person to take advice from, but so far this is working good for me
