Discus phermone

well i wanted to post this because i read somewhere that when you have 4-6 discus in a tank there will usually be one or 2 that become larger than the others. this is due to the fact that the larger discus will actually release some type of hormone or phermone or something that actually keeps the other discus from developing like it normally would .. trip huh .. :help:

IMO it is totally false. There will be runts in almost every batch of fish you get because some just dont eat as much as others....that and their natural pecking order has to do with a lot of it. Overall water quality also plays a big part as water quality must be kept up to par to ensure full growth. There are so many variables with discus in their overall size and shape. And a hormone/phermone isnt one of them.

If that is true, and I don't believe that it is, with as many water changes that are often done on a discus tank, if the other discus were releasing a hormone to stunt the growth of the other discus tankmates, the water changes being done and the size of the water changes would pretty much take care of that situation. I have a discus tank that is fully planted and this tank gets four to five water changes a week. All of the discus are growing and thriving, with all of them being about the same size.
