Hi All,

I used to keep Fresh Water Fishes but moved to Salt Water Fishes. However, due to limited SW stocks I have decided once again to move back to FW.

Currently, I have 5 Frontosa Cichlids, 1 Shovel Nose Cat Fish, 1 Up Side Down Cat Fish, 2 Clown Loaches, 3 Blue /Purple Loaches, 5 Red Eye Tetras, 1 Sucker Fish, 1 Ghost Fish and 7 Discus (Red Snake Skin, Blue and Leapord)

My problem is that 2 of my red snake skin and 1 blue Discus are suffering from itch problem. I have already bought some medicine for them but to no avail i also added 2 heaters inside the tank to make the water tempreture constant. I am seriously having a hard time with this problem, it seem the other fish are fine only these 3. I have changed the water 3 times already.

Can anyone help me how to overcome this problem.

Do you mean ich or white spot disease? What is the temperature right now? Size of tank? All of these fish are in the same tank? What medicine did you use and what are your water parameters?

I sure hope you mean 30 C.....

Tank size? Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate readings?

I sure hope you have a really big tank if all of these fish are in the same tank. I also think there may be compatibility problems with your current stock if they are all in the same tank. Because of this, the discus are under stress which has brought on the disease you are now seeing. What are the water test results such as ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate? How often do you do water changes and how much?

Discus really shouldn't be in a tank with many of those other fish. What size tank is this? Discus are extremely sensitive and easily stressed, and have been known to essentially die of stress when they have tankmates who are too boisterous or aggressive. Whatever disease (ich or otherwise) you are now seeing, I can pretty much guarantee is a result of stress.

How often do you do water changes? What are the current parameters (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate)? Discus are very sensitive to water conditions, so this could also be an issue.

It appears only the red-eye tetras are compatible. The rest are far too boisterous. I fear these blue/violet loaches are Yasuhikotakia modesta which are one of the most aggressive loaches. No long-finned fish nor easily overwhelmed fish can easily survive for a long time with these loaches. Not to mention the sucker fish could be a common pleco whose wastes can rapidly deteriorate the water quality or Chinese Algae Eater whose nature changes into a nastier one as it matures.

OMG OMG OMG OMG!!! From the comments recieved, I think the Discus are not the only ones whmo are stress now its me too!!! Concerning the size of the tank, I'll just take a picture and post it. To be frank, I wanted to put my Discus and Frontosa Cichlids together. The rest where just impulsive buying. *sigh* I change 70 percent my water once a week. However, for this week I havent changed any as the tank are under treatment. As in for amonia and nitrates level inside the tank..i have no indications of that. I just use a Ph test and its always 7.0 (green). I assume that when this happen all the parameters are ok. I have managed to moved my clown fishes (thank god for their curiousity) and my shovel nose cat fish and I am in the process of moving the 3 purple/blue loaches. I assume the rest should be Ok as it seems they are timid and shy. As for the up-side-down cat fish is it ok for me to keep it in one tank as its kinda my vaccum cleaner in the tank.

Ive notice this morning that a few of the discus are having slime on their body. What does this means? I cant believe keep discus is this hard. Ive kept arrowanas, pacu, oscars, gars, bichers and etc but discus is by far the most challanging!

Any other advice are most welcome.

Er...The frontosas and discus won't mix well. Sorry about not mentioning it earlier. Keep the discus by themselves and for now, do a daily 20-30% water change.

Take a deep breath

ok??

first you should be aware that Discus are really not that difficult to keep. but, keep in mind they thrive in warm , clean water.

i have never seen a problem with ich in discus..evenin a qt tank where the black neons had ich..the discus never had it.. they have a thick slime coat and they stay in water warm enough to discourage ich.
you really seem to have issues with stocking..and a frontosa(as mentioned ) is NOT a good tank mate with Discus.

you need to get a test kit and test the water. I have t tough time believing you have kept fish for so long and never tested the water.
