I have a 55 gal standard fish tank. There are 7 septra tetras, two giant danios, and one unidentified rainbow fish. Would this be suitable to house three or four juvenile discus, possibly for the duration of their lives? Any comments would be much appreciated

juvie discus require a lot of care, lotsa feeding & clean water. if you do go with juvies, buy from reputable online sellers not from LFS. go to www.simplydiscus.com for sellers.

also, many on AC will help you along, but do your research b4 starting. discus are wonderful fish but do require a bit more maintenance than other fish. your danios I think would be too active/fast for discus.

so ask away & many will help ya. good luck!

It can be done, as sushi says, read as much as you can on discus care before you start.

At the elevated temp that discus prefer the rainbow and danios will be uncomfortable. I wouldn't personally keep serpaes with juvie discus.

As was pointed out, do lots of research before you take the plunge.

I think I would avoid the rainbow and the danios... don't know enough about those tetras. pretty much ditto what everyone here has already said. good luck!

Do you mean Serpae Tetras? I like Serpaes. I've kept them with discus, as well as Rainbow fish. I would agree that the Danios are not going to work well. Young discus, especially, need to be the dominant fish in there tank. Too much movement, like at feeding time, can cause them to introvert- and then they wither and die. Most tetras (that can handle the heat-so no neons) can do well with discus. Rainbows are okay- but remember to let the Discus be the biggest fish in the tank (which they eventually will be)
Good Luck!
Discus rule!

avoid rainbows and danios. there to ''busy'' for discus and rainbows need hard water and danios need cooler water. stick with slower swimming tetras that can handle warmer temps like rummy nose or cardinals
