I have been contemplating a Discus tank. I recently saw five in a 40 gallon tank at my LFS (high end mostly saltwater shop) and although they were very colorful, they reminded me of large round Angel Fish. Not alot of action, mostly just hovering around slowly. What is the attraction to this species. What other species should I consider for a second tank.

I like alot of action and don't mind lots of maintenance. I do bi-weekly water changes on my overloaded 50 gallon uniquarium (built-in wet/dry) and my fish are thriving.

Thanks in advance for opinons-

Well, thier inactivity and "just hovering" behavior probably has to do with the fact that they are in a new setting..probably not been there long...and also that there were 6 of them in only 40 gallons with probably not much hiding space. I believe Discus tend to be on the shy side and shouldn't be in high traffic areas. Also, that's really too many to keep in a tank that size for any length of time, though for temporary quarters like you have in any lfs, it's probably ok for a bit.

I have never kept discus myself and have no experience with keeping them...just using a bit of common sense and a wee bit of knowledge and experience with fish in general in guessing why they didn't seem very active or interesting. I sure would like a tank of them though..and have been reading up on the possibility one day. There are some beautiful color variations out there.

Discus aren't crazy active like africans or cory cats, but they're still pretty lively fish when they're comfortable. They have almost an intelligent awareness about them in the way they swim around the tank searching for every last morsel of food. Their persistence never ceases to amaze me. If they see a piece of food buried down between some leaves, they won't stop trying until they get it. It's almost like they think about things before they do them. It's very different from other fish and it's absolutely absorbing to watch.

One thing you'll want to consider is the placement of the tank. It's extremely important. Make sure you have the tank somewhere where you'll spend a lot of your time. For me, that's my computer room. For a while, I had them in a tank in my bedroom and, although I'm in there a lot, I was always in and out and they never got used to seeing me there. They would run and hide any time I went anywhere near the tank. Now that they're back in my computer room, they're alive and personable. They come to the glass to beg for food and all that.

Most of the stuff you hear that discus need isn't all that big a deal. They'll do great even in hard, alkaline water. They do fine with lots of light or just a little. They even play nice with Angelfish and plenty of others. However one thing you can't skimp on is water changes. I do 50% at least twice a week and there's still a noticeable behavior difference before and after the water change. They get less active and kinda sluggish if you let the water go. As it gets worse, they'll get skittish and they'll hide a lot. I've even had one freak out and dart around the tank non-stop until he hurt himself really bad and had to stop and hide in a cave. I did a water change and he was back to his normal self.

CajunCC has it pretty much covered.
Mine too are in my computer room. Were they beg every time you walk by.
The only downside I have to say about discus is the water temp. I have my back and bottom insulated, but being in my second bedroom with the computer the room stays very warm in the summer. This room does not cool very well anyway, but just a thought to tank placement.

CajunCC,
Do you laugh at the way the discus blow at their food when it's at the bottom of the tank?
