I am getting a 90 gallon tank in 2 weeks. I am planing on putting discus in it, once it is cycled. I am planing on have it be a planted tank. I was wondering what other fish could be kept with them, in the way of cleaning crew?

they do okay with some species of pleco(sucer mouth catfish) I keep BN's with mine.

I have been warned against some oto's as they try to latch on to the sides of the discus.

also cardinals, black neons..etc.

watch out for suckermouth catfish, like star rider said otos can suck on the sides of discus, but so can plecos...I had an oto that loved the sides of my discus...they were in a planted tank when they were much smaller and I had to seperate the oto often...most tetras will be okay...there are a few exceptions...you want a tetra that can handle higher water temps, and dont swim sparadically, but a slower swimming tetra. Also cories do well with discus, but once again watch out for their temp requirements as many cories cant handle the higher temps...sterbai (spelling) cories do well w/ discus.

when plecos are properly fed they shouldn't ever go after other fish. however, feeding them properly means that they will poop a lot, all the time, and that will really force you to do extra water changes and tank maintenence to keep the water clean enough for the health of your discus.

Not all corys work with discus. many corys are not happy in the the temps discus need. Keeping it simple- try cardinal tetras and sterbai corys. A bn pleco should also be fine with them.

No matter what some folks may tell you, to be healthy discus need really clean water. This means at least 3 water changes every week and vacs as needed- often with each wc.

I have a discus with a chinese algae eater. I was told to watch them to make sure they don't start sucking on any fish...but so far it's been about 6 months and the two get along fine. I also have a mass of tiny snails that breed like rabbits. I had an oto in there but sure enough he was the one that started to suck on the discus so I switched him out. Between the snails, the chinese sucker and my filtration it's a clean tank. I had a pleco in there before but he just pooped way too much so I switched him out for something that wouldn't grow as big as well. I also have some zebra danios, cardinals, and rummynose and they all do fine with the pH.

You know that tetras that is the size 5cm and below and the breadth of the fish should not be below 3cm or else...........an adult discus will easily slip these into their moths. If you keep neons with discus fry like about 4 weeks-6weeks old it should be fine.If you keep neons with discus that is 10cm to 15cm in length then you are in moderate risk of the neons will be eaten up.

For me, I am the clean up crew with my discus.

Maybe I'm lucky (or deprived) but I've never seen a discus eat anything other than what I feed it and I've always had my discus with tetras of one sort of another.
