I recently purchased a discus at a local aquarium store. I brought him home and after a couple of hours he was fine. (He was kind of in shock)I tested the water and it is fine. Now that he is in his new tank all he does is hide. I understand that discus are shy fish but mine won't eat. Is this normal? Should I wait another couple of days and see what happens? What if he won't eat?

Discus tend to be very picky about what they eat. Just one of the reasons that it's best to buy them from a breeder so you can ask what they are normally fed. You can starve him into eating new foods, but there is a possibility of stunted growth.

Discus are schooling fish...they should really be kept in groups of 5 or more. This could be one of the reasons he is hiding so much. It's also possible that he is stressed, and hiding because he doesn't feel well. Keep a close watch on your water params...discus like very clean water.

Discus are probably one of the most sensitive fish to acclimate to new surroundings.

Is your discus the only discus in the tank? That could lead to stress. As for getting him to eat, I've read live bloodworms are good.

I have tried to get onto the simply discus forums all weekend and still can not get activated. It is very frustrating but it is still a good site for info.
