Discus

The discus police are why I suggested going to the show tanks and biotypes section. The people in that sectin will be able to help you more than the other sections. There are many good people in the other sections but they don't know enough about planted tanks. I keep my discus in a planted tank also and mine are healthy and large.

DISCUS POLICE!!!! though i did mention the negative effects of the co2 system and fertilizer, i am a strong believer in gravel, plants, and other species. each of these has an important thing to offer to the biome you create. Plants are excellent at purifying water and getting rid of toxic substances and provide a hiding place for fish that would other wise be abused and they will not scar fish such as a "No Fishing" sign I recommend them in bare bottom tanks for those reasons as well. As for gravel that’s the only reason why people who have bare bottom tank think they have to do so much maintenance , the best biological filter you can buy in gravel it has the most surface area for bacteria to cling to and is sustained by the fish that they clean the water for. as for other species as long as they are peace full and not overly active I’m all for them i.e. plecostomis.

I meant the discus police that think discus can only be kept in BB tanks, that was not you fish_e_o. Sorry.

simply discus is a great site. Very friendly, you'll find no rude comments there. From the site i've learned that you don't need to use ro/low pH water for KEEPING discus. That's right - considtency and good water quality is most important. pH 7.8 is find. For BREEDING them, that's a different story. They recomend lower pH.

They are not against planted discus tanks, but feel that for growing out the discus (takes about a year), discus only, bare bottom tanks is the way so the fish can grow to their full potential.

What I found interesting is they know tons about the fish, but less than you would think about water chemistry, and some of them go overboard. Once guy cleaned his sponge filter with bleach/water solution when cleaning the filter. Of course someone pointed out that it wouldn't be nice for the nitrifying bacteria.
