Hi! I've been lurking here a lot lately, but haven't posted in quite some time.

Ayhow, I just bought a used 55 gal tank. I need to buy a hood for it, and the guy at my LFS said I needed to know whether it was a Perfecto or an All-Glass tank. Of course, he couldn't tell me how to tell the difference.

Does anyone know how to tell the difference?

Thanks!

I am not sure, and depending upon age, things change between all manufacturers. It may or may not still have the decals/labels on them.

But if it is your standard 4 foot 55, most all 48" fixtures will work.

Thanks for your help!

There are no labels on it that I can find. I thought that I had heard that a Perfecto would have a picture of an anchor on it somewhere, but I can't find one.

Also, I think I would prefer 2x24" hoods, I think that this should work.

Maybe I'll just assume All-Glass since I can't find an anchor. If it doesn't fit I can always return them.

I think there are only very slight differences in the two....just measure the inside lip between the top braces and then measure the hood to see it it will sit in there if you are going the 2 x 24" route.

Glass tops for many AG vs Perfecto tanks are different sizes. The tops are not interchangeable and the light strips may fit differently as well.

Sounds good, I'll just take measurements and get the one that fits.

Thanks! :-)

we have a 55g aga tank that we got from my parents, the tank was missing glass tops, we went to the local petsmart and they had perfecto tops on clearance, and we had them for 7 dollars for both. they fit fine, but i realized the quality of it wasn't as good as the aga ones we got for our 40g aga tank

KuchDaddy is right sizes are just a little off Perfecto's are to small to fit an all glass.
measure the opening then go to doctors F. & S. they have the measurements of the glass size so you can tell which you have.

Aquariumguys.com sells the hinges so you could get the glass a your local glass shop and make your opening what ever size you want.

I too made that mistake when I got my 55 gallon Perfecto tank for free. I got the AGA 2x24" hoods and they didn't fit- the center brace on the Perfecto is wider than on the AGA. Another issue I've had is that I went ahead and bought a 48" glass top for the Perfecto, but it turns out that the center brace is not recessed at all like it is on the AGA tanks. Therefore, the glass top kind of "see-saws" on top of the center brace. It's annoying, but I live with it.
