It would support a lot more weight vertically if you put additional pieces of 2x4 inside the vertical ones you already have. Then, the weight is carried to the floor through a vertical piece of wood, not putting shear pressure on a few wood screws. Much stronger that way.

exactly. and a plywood top would be really beneficial. you can't count on the plastic rim for structure... it's just not that strong.
