DIY canopy questions

I ended up using 1x8s, and 1/2" plywood for the top. Did most of it this morning it worked out fairly well. i sat the plywood within the frame so 1x8 with 1.5" trim ended up being a pretty decent height. I guess its sanded plywood cause it looks as good as the wood i used for the sides. the 1x8 was the quality grade or w/e is knot free since its gonna be in the family room. Kinda ended up being a bit more expensive then i planned but still way cheaper then anything i could buy. The wood was 15 for the sides and 15 for the plywood.

I did a 1x2 across the back like in yours. However i did a angled front.

I think its gonna turn out really well, especially for my first wood project. Give me 5-10 min and ill get some pics up since im bored and not able to fall asleep

I can't load the first link for some reason. looking at the other 2 I would agree, it looks good for a first time wood project. Nice job.

Thanks. Any suggestions for changes? I plan on building one for my 29gal and then eventually one for a larger tank so id like to know ways of improving it.

The only thing I would tell you to change is the back. I would recommend using a single 1x4 across the back instead of the small piece across the top and down the sides. Use screws. This will keep the back open for filters and such like you already have it, but it will also provide bracing for stability and integrity.
Other than that, everything else is pretty much personal preference.
Again, nice job.

This is what I did on mine. Basically constructed of 3/4" birch veneer plywood. the interior bracing that sits on the tank is 2x4 and there is a 48 inch piano hinge that runs along the back. Only thing I really have left to do is make a cut out in the back if I want to use a HOB filter or I will cut holes in it for the canister tubing. I used a Minwax cherry stain then a few coats of polyurethane and was sanded and wet sanded several times.

Here are a few pics since a picture is worth a thousand words....

nice.
Just finished putting the last coat of polyurethane on, looks pretty good but not perfect.. my technique was a little off :uhoh:

I like the hinges on the inside. Right now when open mine will end up resting on the back.. wonder if that will cause damage...

Excellent work. that's the Dr. Seuss hat look that I referred to in another post though. (No offense intended) Not my style, but like i also said in another post, most of this is personal preference. To each his own.
I really like it other than it's height. Beautiful work.
