I've never seen a canopy, so I don't really know what they are (to me it looks like a large piece of wood on the top of the tank to make it look nicer :thud: ). My question is, would it be possible to build one? What about evaporation, special wood? If you were using HOB filters, how do they fit? I bought a 180g tank, and I really like the looks of a canopy as opposed to a plastic/glass lid, but I don't know enough about them to know if it would be an option.
Thanks

yup i made a few, cost me 20 dollars or so for my 60 gallon when they wanted 125 or so. i just used laminated pine. any real wood is fine since you have the glass lid. its a lot easier to make one once youve seen one at the store. and its fine with hobs since most canopies dont have the back. i would put one on yours since the 6 foot length might sag or atleast put a leg near the back. heres how i built mine

for the top i got a piece of 1/2 pine about 3 inches longer than the tank and i think 2 inches wider. sawed it in half lengthwise and used a piano hinge to attach them. for the front piece it was 4 inch by the 1/2 wood made just 2 inches longer than the tank and the 2 side pieces were the width of the tank. attach the 2 side pieces the the back of the front piece and i measured and inch and a half up from the bottom all around the inside of the canopy then i nailed one some scrap woood to make legs for the canopy to stand on the tanks edge. screwed on the top of the canopy and i was done. easier with pictures but go check out a canopy at petsmart and you will see what i mean, its pretty simple to build a regular one.
