I really have no need to buy a huge thing of silicone, so could I just hot glue around where the plastic tubing would go in, instead of silicone?
 
That's what I used. Once it cools off, it's inert and not in contact with anything going into the tank (other than the gas). It also bonded really well to the plastic cap, I got a perfect seal first time around. Also helps to make your hole a bit smaller than the tubing to ensure it's a really tight, secure fit...the glue's just a secondary measure at that point.
 
The glue is actually a sof plastic that the glue gun melts at about 200 degrees and when it hardens, it's back to the regular soft plastic. I've used it a couple of times when I have a leak in my tubing.
