This is as good as it gets.
I keep my bottles jammed together inside a plastic tupperware basin. So...they can't be knocked over. 
ive got my 2L on a very short airline and ive got an airline connector lightly jointing the stone and bottle at the top of the tank. Makes changing the mixture easier and incase the thing does fall over the connector will pop off and the bottle will spill behind my aquarium. shampooing the carpet sure beats destroying a tank.
It's actually not hard to clean out of the carpet at all. Yeah, I've made a mess, early on, it's mostly just sugar water anyway.
