DIY Dawn and Dusk Simulating lighting

I've been wondering the same thing. New to this and have a 10 gallon tank but had read in here about Dusk and dawn and not flipping out fish etc. I think as long as you don't go from one extreme to the other it's not such an issue. I've considered looking into perhaps rope lighting. even a couple of feet run along the back of the tank. When turned on in the morning I think it would give enough of a "glow" before eventually turning on the aquarium light(talking about 5-6 am when room is still pitch black as opposed to after actual sunrise when room is already lit)

There was an article on this in Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine I'd say maybe 6 or 9 months ago. I think it was in the skeptical aquarist or planted tank column. I recall that the author did not find the stressful moment of lights on/off to have any negative impact, although I can't recall how the conclusion was reached.

I think the visual impact would be pretty cool to see.

Yeah, but let me tell you, I spent a LOT more than anyone ever should. Total came out to just under 400 dollars. It was worth it as this is the tank I stare at for 8 hours every day (its on my desk) and I needed it to be cool, quiet, and energy efficient.

Instead of going my way, I would look into some low-wattage flourescents. I have some in my kitchen under the cabinets that are really great and look just like the morning sun. They cost like 15 dollars.

IM sure you can find them at any home improvement store by the name of "under cabinet lights"
