anyone have ideas or projects to make my own decor? I dont wear the money hat so i cant really afford that fancy petco stuff.

Hmm.. Well there's the terracotta pot method (they're usually about a dollar at a plant nursery). You can put them in whole (after remove the stickers) or break them with a hammer.

You can also buy terracotta (or similar) clays and make anything you want out of them. I'm sorely tempted to try this, but it requires a kiln and I don't have access to one.

There's some projects I've seen using cement or foam products (can't recall - think it was Styrofoam and some spray?) to make 3D backgrounds - I'm sure you can use them other ways too. Shouldn't be too hard to find some of the articles on that.

quick, free decor: slate! if you got slate rock in your yard, you could take a bunch of small thin peices and make a rock formation in your tank. not only are you creating a natural scene, but also creating many hiding spots for your fish.

I have access to a kiln, I guess I never thought about making something... Well, I'm off to brainstorm.

I shop at the local landscaping yard. All stone 25 cents a pound. They have all kinds of cool stone. Just do some research and know what you are putting in your tank. Also you can find wood at the same place sometimes. I use hardwood that I found at the park, live oak, that was really dead, boiled it for a couple of days and free driftwood. Again know what you are putting in your tank. I would never pay the outrageous prices they want at the fish stores and chain stores.

go to the nearest river rock = free.

There is a section on these forms for getting some plants for cheap

Clay pots as mentioned earlyer.

Doller stores have some kelned clay statues that work good.

Cocunut shells about a buck and they give you 2 halfs.

Guppies buy one prego femail END UP WITH LOTS OF FISH. (most live barrors)

Find a local aqurium club near you and they will help out the new person with free stuff.

The most important as you walk around think fishy...It works you come up with all kinds of neat ideas and if your not sure about somethings effects in the tank then ask here you will get a quick answer.

i agree with this 100% when i have my tank on my mind everything i see is how would it work in my fish tank. when i am setting up a tank getting everything ready i am really thinking about the tank no where is safe and everyone hates me cuz i point things out like hey that would work......

Yea my GF gets mad and says "Every thing is eather a fishtank or a computer thing with you. Dont you ever think of any thing different?" of course my response kinda gets her mad as I respond with this. "I know what I love and I think about it every secound." Boy she gets mad but thats ok she just dosn't need to know I am actualy refuring to her. The other things come secound.
