just wondering about a "BUILD YOUR OWN TANK"

i have a question on building my own tank.....my local glass company has some acrylic on sale and was wondering if anyone has tried to make thier own tank?

im wanting to give this a try but no idea how thick i need, how much, what glue(S)....

im wanting to make about 200g tank.......but i want it more long than tall....

im thinkin about 30-36in tall......and about 24-30 deep.....

any ideas or info on whats needed or anything.....

thanks

seen that........nice but not what im wanting......

im wanting to make an ALL ACRYLIC tank.......wih a one piece structure(main body)....like take one long piece......and where it would make the sides...heat and bend and then onlyave one seam on the main body....then the other seems only be the top and bottom.....

DJ:

Unless you are after an unusual feature such as a bow front (which I have) or do not want the perimeter structure glass is a much better medium than acrylic IMHO.

I will probably never purchase another acrylic tank.

The panel seams in commercial acrylic tanks are warm welded which I do not believe that I could accomplish without ruining a bunch of acrylic panels.

Check with the company that is selling the acrylic.
I am sure if they sell it, they build stuff with it..
they probably sell the cement too.
Zig:

What you are proposing my be no problem at all but I phrased my post as I did because of 187PSF at the bottom of a 36" tank and the approximate bending stress of 400PSF at the middle of a 4' tank. (ie. the parameters associated with fish tank construction vary significantly from those associated with green house panel construction).

My local guy supplies acrylic becuase he fabricates with it.
he knows the strengths and weaknesses of acrylic and polycarbonate and the like, and has built several aquariums as well as display cases and such.
I guess i assumed that your guy was of similar background.

Check him out here:

www.buschplastics.com

he sells the stuff for solvent welding plastics, as well as the hinges and other needed materials.
