DIY inline heater

one of those little compression fittings cant be that expensive.

If you put the entire heater in the PVC you have to worry about a few things

1.) How will you adjust the temp if need be? you would need to take the entire heater apart

2.) leaving just the cord sticking out is a weak spot.... using epoxy or silicone or anything else, eventually the cord will break it loose.

3.) if the heater breaks, replacing it becomes a pain since its all sealed in there.

if you use one of those compression fittings, and it doesnt need to be a heyco fitting, just a similar one, you heater becomes removable easily, accessible easily, and you end up with a much much more professional looking DIY product.

The proper inline heaters like the hydor has an auto shut off incase the waterflow stops too prevent the heater overheating and damaging it. Is your heater too big to fit in your sump. Mine is in the sump and it dose a great job.

MOST HEATERS COME WITH THERMAL PROTECTION DO THEY NOT? (sorry caps)

i would think it would be safer in water that gets too hot, than getting too hot out of water.

if water stopped flowing in a DIY model, would not the thermostat prevent it from getting hotter than the set temp?

I was going to build one of those inline heaters but I had second thoughts after I got the 1-1/2" PVC. There's not enough space around the heater for water IMO so I scratched the idea. If I had gotten a 2" PVC I probably would have gone through with that DIY project.

One thing that bothered me though was I was going to incorporate the DIY CO2 reactor into the assembly but I got worried about the buildup of a CO2 pocket higher where the heater is... this would be like running it dry and possibly a fire hazard.

Now I'm not done with that idea yet... I'm thinking maybe a dual tube CO2 reactor and inline heater :)
