Does anyone know how to or where I can get a detailed tutorial on how to make a DIY Moonlight project? I've seen some pics on it but I haven't seen any detailed explanation to it.

well i personally don't have experience with moonlights, but to my understanding they are just low powered leds. i can help you there here are a few links:

http://www.lsdiodes.com/ (shop that sells low volume and cheaper then radioshack)

http://www3.telus.net/chemelec/Calculators/LED.htm (Calculator for resistors to use)

http://ledmuseum.home.att.net/reserved.htm (in depth faq about leds)

i don't know how much a moonlight costs but if you are willing to read and do a bit of soldering you can prolly save a little and learn a little

ohh and you can adjust the brightness of the led by using different resistors

deeplove,

I just finished making them for my tank, i will write some instructions and take some pics tonight when i get home from work, its really quite easy, I just used blue computer CCFL tubes (neon lights) and stuck them up in the hood, used a 9v DC transformer cut the plug off the end, cut the molex (computer plug) off the power lead to the neon transformer, soldered em up and bam instant moon light, I also used black electrical tape on 2 sides of the neon to dim it down a bit. It works like a treat. but yeah as i said i'll post some pics etc tonight when i get home...

Cheers,
Kym

I mean how do you keep the LED from getting wet? I guess I could stick it into my light hood.

this is the idea that i used, just modified it so the switch was on the back and a female plug for the ac adapter. then i just put a timer on the it and done. only other thing i did was to put black electrical tape on the bottom of the CCFL tube. I've had no problems with any of the bits getting wet either. cost me all of $13 AUS.
