DIY Perfect-A-Hood MKII

Cool idea....might do this to mine as I have two of those hoods across my 55g tank.

When you wired in the sockets did you tie them into the on/off switch built in the hood or did you just hard wire them straight into the plugin cord?

I use a timer for my lights so I was thinking I could just hard wire straight into the cord and not worry with the switch.

My tank isnt planted (for now anyway) but I would like having some different light combinations to brighten the tank up some since the 17w bulbs dont do alot. And if later down the road I decide to add live plants then lighting wouldnt be a big issue.

I've done it both ways. On my 150 I wired them with a switch, even though they're on a timer. On the 55 I wired them all hard-wired without a switch...they'll always be on a timer anyway so I didn't see the need to spend extra money on a few switches if I was never going to use them.

Thanks for the input.... I will most likely hard wire them and let my timer handle the switching on/off

mine are wired into the switch.... I may need to add some small fans to take care of the heat, but if I do that, they will be wired onto the relay that controls the moonlights.

I still need a timer, and MKIII of my mod, will have the timer built directly into the hood, allowing me to remove the second cord for the LEDs and run a bypass right off the timer.... one cord, one switch, everything controlled.

jaysn, thats decent, but i didnt want to go cutting into the components if I didnt HAVE to... besides ive more than doubled the light output on my tank.

I will get some shots if I can, but if you want to see the moonlights click the link in my sig "DIY Moonlight Mod" there is a shot there... the difference now is the spirals block most of the LEDs from shining directly into the water, so they are a bit dimmer, but more spread out now, and achieves a way more realistic moonlight effect.

I would NEVER want to hardwire anything like this, because if the timer fails, your lights wont turn off unless you unplug them, or if you need to turn them off for any reason they will need to be unplugged.... and the odds are good that when it comes crunch time... you WILL forget to plug them back in :)

I may even stick a power bar on the back of this thing and have all my devices plugged into the hood, with only one cord powering everything.... but now im getting too far ahead of myself :)

I was thinking of doing that.

BTW, Jaysn aluminum foil is a defuser. Your better off using white paint. Try finding some type of chromed/polished metal or some chrome mylar film.

In my DIY lights, I used actual aluminum tape. I think I got in in the HVAC section at Lowes. It's got great adhesive and can be applied without any bubbles if done carefully.

Nicely done....where the heck dija find the blue CFLs???

Exactly what I've been thinking abt doing to my 20H hood...24", should be able to get 3 of 'em in there.

Not that this will help those of you in the US, but for fellow Canadians.. I came across them in Canadian Tire the other day. Caught my eye because I had read this thread the day before. Blue, Yellow, Red and Green.

DarkSoul. your the man!!!! i have a perfect-o hood on my 55g hex and its only a measley 15w and im getting another generic 20" hood to try to get 30w. But i seen your awesome mod.

i was curious for a master as urself how long did it take? and what size is that hood? i hope 18.5" like mine.

whats the MKI and MKII?

i hope your still watching this one? i know its been a few months.

i havent been watching since my comp is broken, but that should be rectified in the next few days.

anyway, MKI was my moon light mod, and MKII is the addition of screw in compacts instead of the tube.

i think the fixture is like 24" long or something, but the tube is 18" IIRC.

ok yesssssss i think i can fit that.

how long did it take?

and whats IIRC?

IIRC - if I recall correctly
